This is a very special class at UC Davis. Here’s why:

  1. This is a field-based ecology class – we do science (mostly) outside. As it turns out, amazing things happen out there.
  2. This is a small class for highly motivated students. The class is two quarters (20 weeks) long and tons of work, and we all get to know each other well. For many of our students, this class is a capstone experience of their undergraduate career.
  3. This class does real research. Each class spends months developing, designing, executing, analyzing and writing up an ambitious group research project. Several of these projects have lead to really good scientific papers published in peer-reviewed journals, like this one. The opportunity to do a real research project is particularly valuable for those students who are considering graduate school in the sciences.

This class was originally created by Sharon Strauss and Mau Stanton, two inspired ecologists at UC Davis. I hope to continue in those big footsteps for 2013 and beyond.
